In our society today, many people rely on the media to get the latest news and keep up with the latest fashion trends and models. Media in our society today plays a big role in acting as the main method of mass communication. Some examples include newspapers, television news, magazines and the internet.
If the media gets taken over by a wrong group of people that twists facts to suit their agenda, then many readers will get false information, giving rise to the problem of fake news. I feel that fake news exists in both government owned and private owned media, and it is of prime importance that we as active media users get as much people to learn about the existence and the threat of fake news, and how to differentiate between them. People of the world regardless of race, language or religion should have the rights to access true and accurate media and news reports from all around the world, to better understand the world and increase our knowledge on current affairs so as to make better judgements on political and social issues.
In the case of a government owned media, they tend to be more bias in their writing, only having the country’s interests at heart. They would also try to garner the support of the citizens through the media to encourage cohesiveness of the people in the country through ample motivation. However, the government might sometimes try to omit certain portions of the media if that particular piece of information threatens their position of power or their interests. I feel that this is the only viable drawback of a government owned media. Even if the piece of news is not favourable to the government, citizens of the country deserve to have the most real picture of the actual news that is occurring.
As a matter of fact, the government in certain countries even make use of the media to spread political propaganda, just so they can have more control over the entire state or country. Therefore, the more control they have over the media, the more they can brainwash the citizens of the country by omitting certain important facts in the media, leading to undesirable outcomes.
In the case of a privately owned media, media reports tend to be more neutral as they will report the most accurate news possible, regardless of how absurd the piece of news is. This is because they have no hidden agenda when controlling the media.
Therefore, I feel that both government owned media and privately owned media has their pros and cons. I believe that as long as a country has a fair balance of a government owned media and private owned media, it should be fine. That way, people will be given the freedom to choose what type of news platform they want to read from. In conclusion, I feel that it does not matter who owns the media. As long as we as avid media users know how to properly fish out true and accurate news from the media, it should be fine.
Hey friend!!! I enjoyed reading your blog post and I definitely agree with how both government and private owned media have their fair share of pros and cons! It always better to have it more balanced than one side of the ownership being stronger!
It was really great that each statement you made and you elaborated even further! It made me understand your blog more and for me to gain more knowledge from these statements! Like how you explained about the government being bias and letting people see what they want to see and i agree with that too!
I love how you ended off with how it does not matter who owns the media because everyone picked a side that was better and even I did! But I agree, with how at the end of the day, it all comes down with how we make use of the media that has been given to us and how we will act towards it because we all have a choice to make and what kind of choices we make towards media is up to us! I can’t wait to read more of your blogs!! 🙂

Hello Sean! I strongly agree with you. I, too, don’t think that who owns the media is important because both government and private owned media have their very own pros and cons. Rather than having one kind of media ownership, people should instead be able to freely choose which platform they want to engage in.
In my opinion, however, I don’t think that private owned media are more neutral and report accurate news as they too may tend to be bias, though we all are by nature. Also, despite being supposedly more objective, they may still be politically influenced. Worst case scenario, the editorial team in a private media organisation may be given incentives by political officials. This case, can certainly have hidden agendas.
That, aside, I really enjoyed reading your blog! Your writing is very coherent and I look forward to your future blog posts!
